CCL PhD student, Kaitlyn Lawrence, hosted by CCL collaborator, Dr. Marco Baratieri, of Bioenergy & Biofuels Lab, Italy

As a visiting student, Kaitlyn Lawrence continued her work on the catalytic use of waste to energy ashes in NOx reduction at the Bioenergy & Biofuels LAB. The lab is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano and is located at the NOI Techpark of Bolzano. The Italian group is led by Dr. Marco Baratieri, a trailblazer in the thermochemical processing of biomass. He advised Lawrence during her 3-month visit to South Tyrol, in which she did characterization experiments of ashes and biochars using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and she performance tested ash as a catalyst in treating real engine exhaust.
