CCL PI Contributes to National Debate on Chemical Recycling in The Environmental Forum

We are proud to share that Professor Marco J. Castaldi, Principal Investigator of the Combustion and Catalysis Laboratory (CCL), has contributed a commentary to The Environmental Forum, a flagship publication of the Environmental Law Institute.

His piece, titled “Let’s Get the Most Out of Plastic Waste,” will appear in the May/June 2025 issue as part of The Debate, a regular section of the periodical that features diverse perspectives on pressing environmental issues. This edition of The Debate explores the complex and often controversial role of chemical recycling in addressing plastic waste: “Chemical Recycling: More Pollution? Or a Sustainability Solution?”

Dr. Castaldi joins a distinguished panel of seven thought leaders representing a wide spectrum of views, including:

  • Davis Allen, Investigative Researcher, Center for Climate Integrity
  • Sandeep Bangaru, Vice President of Circular Economy Platforms, Eastman
  • Lee Bell, Technical and Policy Advisor, International Pollutants Elimination Network
  • Ross Eisenberg, President, America’s Plastic Makers
  • Rachel Meidl, Fellow of Energy & Sustainability, Rice University Baker Institute for Public Policy
  • Renee Sharp, Director of Plastics and Petrochemicals Advocacy, NRDC

In his commentary, Dr. Castaldi underscores the importance of adopting a science- and engineering-based approach to plastic waste management, emphasizing that when properly implemented, chemical recycling technologies can play a meaningful role in maximizing resource recovery while minimizing environmental impact.

We encourage colleagues, students, and stakeholders in sustainability, policy, and chemical engineering to read this timely exchange and reflect on the evolving intersection of technology, regulation, and environmental responsibility.
