My research investigates the combustion of landfill gas and synthesis gas mixtures as fuel for high-performance engines. The use of landfill gas as a fuel is a well-established practice, but because of its low quality (CO₂ detracts from the combustibility of CH₄), it is currently unusable as fuel in, for example, car engines. The addition of synthesis gas (H₂ and CO) to the landfill gas has shown to increase the quality of the landfill gas, resulting in more complete combustion and lower emissions (NOx, Unburned Hydrocarbons, CO). I am working with a 5 HP, 4-stroke, 2 cylinder internal combustion Honda engine and simulated landfill and synthesis gas.
